Dhaka, June 14 (bdnews24.com) – The government has decided to pilot the formation of students council through elections at 100 primary schools, secretary of primary education ministry Abu Alam Md. Shahid Khan said on Monday.
The decision is aimed at building democratic attitude and tolerance of others' opinions among students and involve them in school development activities, he said.
Under the proposed council, which will have a one-year term, students of class three to five can become candidates in the elections to be held in January every year.
A seven-member students' council will be formed with at least two candidates from each class.
Besides, two assistant representatives will be nominated from each class at the primary level.
These representatives will help in conducting the council.
It will monitor seven main tasks in terms of books and learning instruments, health, sports and culture, water resources, midday meals and greetings and entertainment.
The relevant school headmaster will delegate the duties to the council.
The elected councils will meet once in a month and a general council will be held every six months with the presence of other students.
In the pilot project, elections will be held initially at 100 schools under 20 Upazila on Tuesday, the secretary said.
The Upazilas include Putia of Rajshahi, Ullahpara of Sirajganj, Sherpur of Bogra, Fultola of Khulna, Shailkupa of Jhenaidah, Barisal Sadar, Bhandaria of Pirojpur, Gafargaon of Mymensingh, Monohordi of Narshigdi, Mirzapur of Tangail, Kapasia of Gazipur, Tungipara of Gopalganj, Rangpur Sadar, Hatibandha of Lalmonirhat, Doublemorring & Chandaish of Chittagong, Ramu of Cox's Bazar, Begumganj of Noakhali, Sylhet Sadar and Srimangal of Moulvibazar.
Students' councils will also be formed at some other primary schools in other Upazilas after Chittagong City Corporation elections scheduled on June 17, Khan said.
