The education authorities have sent the final draft of the Dhaka Central University (DCU) ordinance to the Cabinet Division for approval amid protests.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Education confirmed the matter while students from seven government colleges announced fresh demonstrations, including a mobile “ordinance stage”, to press for its immediate issuance.

In a statement, the education ministry said it was hoping for swift approval of the ordinance and urged restraint so that protests pressing for the ordinance do not disrupt public life.

The statement said the draft was finalised after incorporating opinions from experts, relevant government offices, the public, teachers, students and members of civil society.

The proposed DCU will incorporate seven government colleges in Dhaka.

Students from the government colleges on Sunday evening announced fresh protests.

The first of the “ordinance stages” will be launched at 11:30am on Monday at Science Lab, followed by the launching of five other similar “stages” at the college campuses.

The “mobile stages” will roam around campuses between Jan 19 and 21, explaining the rationale for the DCU and drawing support from politicians, academics and civil society members.

Students from the campuses will converge at the Science Lab at 11am on Jan 22 and stay there until the ordinance is approved by the Advisory Council, the students said in a media statement.

The statement regretted the inconveniences created by the ordinance.

The proposed DCU will include Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls College, Government Titumir College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, and Government Bangla College.
