The Election Commission (EC) has announced a revised election schedule for the Pabna-1 and Pabna-2 seats after a court ruling resolved a dispute over constituency boundaries.
Under the new timetable, candidates have until Sunday to submit nomination papers. The commission said candidates who had previously submitted nomination papers for the constituencies will be required to file them again if they wish to contest the election.
Voting in the two constituencies will be held on Feb 12, in line with the rest of the country, as part of Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary election.
Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said the polls would be held under the revised boundaries approved by the court.
“Candidates must submit nomination papers under the new schedule. Those who filed earlier will need to resubmit by Sunday if they want to take part,” he said.
The new schedule was issued late on Thursday in a gazette following a ruling by a four-member Appellate Division bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury. The court granted permission to appeal against an earlier High Court ruling related to constituency delimitation.
According to the revised timetable, nomination papers must be submitted by Jan 18, with scrutiny scheduled for Jan 19. Appeals may be filed between Jan 20-24 and will be disposed of on Jan 25. The deadline for withdrawing candidacy is Jan 26, and electoral symbols will be allocated on Jan 12.
The EC had published a gazette in September setting out revised boundaries for all 300 parliamentary constituencies. However, legal challenges led to changes in the boundaries of Pabna-1 and Pabna-2 after the election schedule had already been announced.
As a result of the Supreme Court decision, the boundaries outlined in the EC's September gazette will remain in force for the two constituencies.
