A group of BNP activists have allegedly attacked and vandalised the home of former president Md Abdul Hamid during a celebratory procession in Kishoreganj’s Mithamoin Upazila.
The doors, windows and furniture of the house were vandalised in the attack, which occurred in Kamalpur village around 11pm on Monday. However, no casualties were reported as no one was home at the time.
Mithamoin Police Station Sub-Inspector Al Momen confirmed the information and said that upon receiving a report of the incident, police immediately went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Police and witnesses say that the Upazila wing of the BNP brought out a celebratory procession from Mithamoin Bazar on Monday night to express their satisfaction with the International Crimes Tribunal’s death sentence for ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in a case over crime against humanity linked to the July Uprising. As many as 60 to 70 BNP leaders and activists reportedly took part in the procession.
They said some activists broke through the main door of Hamid’s house and entered. Later, they vandalised the windows and furniture and other belongings inside. Police were deployed in the area immediately after the incident.
SI Momen said police and Army personnel were deployed at the scene and the situation was brought under control. No one has filed a report with the police station over the incident and no arrests were made.
