The water supply to a large swath of Chattogram has been cut off after a WASA pipe broke during development activities associated with the ongoing waterlogging mitigation project.
The supply pipe was damaged on Monday afternoon during the construction of a culvert as part of the project in the residential areas adjacent to the city's Oxygen-Kuwaish Road.
Since then, the water supply has been disrupted in parts of the city. Buildings that do not have deep tube wells as an alternative source of water are suffering the most.
The Chattogram Development Authority, or CDA, is implementing the project. Piling work was underway during the incident.
Through this pipeline, water is supplied to different areas of the city from Karnaphuli Water Treatment Plant No. 1 in Rangunia Upazila.
The water supply to the north and south Halishahar, Agrabad, Naya Bazar, Madarbari, Dewanhat, Dhanialapara, Lalkhan Bazar, WASA intersection, GEC intersection, Gate No. 2, Bayezid Bostami, Nasirabad, Oxygen, Muradpur, Kadamtali, Anandabazar, Roufabad, Ruby Gate, Hillview Residential Area, Momenbagh, Bahaddarhat, Kuwaish, Nandankanan, Jamal Khan, Nabab Siraj Ud Daulah Road, Chawkbazar, Andarkilla, and adjoining areas has been interrupted.
Madarbari resident Khurshid Alam told bdnews24.com: “There has been no water in the area since Tuesday. We are buying water to cook with, but there is no water for bathing and other household chores."
Md Adnan, a resident of the Chawkbazar area, said: "WASA water is the only hope here. There isn’t even a pond nearby which can be used as an alternative. We are in great danger because of the disruption of our water supply."
Chattogram WASA has started repair work on the pipeline. However, officials say that it may take a couple of days for the supply to return to normal.
Mohammad Anwar Pasha, managing director of Chattogram WASA, told bdnews24.com: “A public notice in this regard has been issued. All efforts are being made to bring the situation back to normal as soon as possible."
