Low-lying areas along rivers in five districts could face temporary flooding over the coming days, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has warned.
The vulnerable districts are Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Sherpur, Mymensingh and Netrokona, according to the FFWC's latest bulletin issued on Friday.
Officials said all major rivers are still flowing below danger levels, but rising water could cause temporary inundation in some parts of the country.
The alert follows a deep depression that formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal this week. The system crossed India’s Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast late Thursday and has since weakened into a land depression, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
In the past 24 hours, heavy rainfall was recorded in the Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, though no significant rain was reported upstream in India.
However, between Oct 3-6, the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Sylhet districts, along with neighbouring Indian states, may see heavy to very heavy rain, forecasters said.
In the Rangpur Division, water in the Teesta has already risen. Levels of the Dharla have fallen while the Dudhkumar remains stable. Authorities warn the Teesta could reach the danger mark, leading to flooding in parts of Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari.
In the Mymensingh Division, the Someshwari and Bhugai rivers have swollen, while the Kangsha remains steady. These rivers may cross the danger levels over the next three days, raising flood risks in Sherpur, Mymensingh and Netrokona.
In the Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions, the Karatoa, Jamuneswari, Punarbhaba and Tangon rivers have risen in the past day, while the Atrai, Upper Atrai, Mahananda and Ghaghot have receded. Some of these rivers are expected to rise sharply over the next three days.
Meanwhile, coastal rivers in the Barishal, Khulna and Chattogram divisions are experiencing higher-than-normal tides, a condition likely to continue for another day.
