Dhaka, Nov 27 (bdnews24.com) — Different organisations are observing the 20th anniversary of Dr Milon, whose killing sparked violent anti-government protests that forced the then military dictator Gen Ershad to step down 10 days later on Dec 6, 1990.
The then joint secretary general of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon was shot dead by criminals backed by Ershad on November 27, 1990 near the Dhaka University Teacher Student Centre.
President Zillur Rahman, prime minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition chief Khaleda Zia have given separate messages to commemorate the day.
Zillur Rahman said he remembers Dr Milon's sacrifice with deep respect.
"Every person supporting democracy greatly respects this young doctor's sacrifice."
Sheikh Hasina said Dr Milon's sacrifice brought the struggle against tyranny to its defining moment.
"From that point it took only 10 days for the dictatorship to fall. I think the only way we can honour this sacrifice is by strengthening the foundations of democracy and ensuring basic rights for everyone."
Khaleda Zia called on everyone to unite and strengthen democracy.
"Milon's sacrifice gives us strength. We must institutionalise democracy to reach our desired end."
