The identities of the four bodies recovered from the Buriganga River have not yet been determined after two days.

Police, however, confirmed on Sunday that two murder cases have been filed in connection with the incidents at the Keraniganj Model and South Keraniganj police stations.

The four bodies were retrieved from the river in Dhaka’s Keraniganj on Saturday.

Two of the bodies, a woman aged around 30 and a boy aged four to five, were found near Mirer Bagh.

Both had cloth wrapped around their necks, according to Sadarghat River Police Outpost.

The other two, a man and a woman, were found floating near Madaripur Ghat in Kalindi Union by personnel from the Barishal River Police outpost.

Investigators suspect all four were murdered.

Police initiated a murder case at the Keraniganj Model Police Station for the bodies recovered from Madaripur Ghat. The river police filed the other murder case at the South Keraniganj Police Station for the bodies of the woman and child.

Unidentified individuals have been named as defendants in both cases, which will be investigated by river police personnel.

Abdullah Al Mamun, superintendent of Dhaka district river police, said: "The victims have not been identified.

"No one from the surrounding areas has come to us to report a missing relative. We are checking the general diaries for missing individuals."

According to the river police, the woman and child whose bodies were recovered had rope marks around their necks. The hands of the other woman and man were tied to a 50kg sack of rice.

Abdullah said, "The man’s right hand and the woman’s left hand were tied together at opposite ends of a rope tied with a sack of rice."
