Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has left Dhaka to attend the Earthna Summit 2025 in Qatar’s capital Doha.
A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying him left Shahjalal International Airport around 7pm on Monday, the Chief Advisor's Press Wing said.
Briefing journalists about the interim government head's four-day visit, Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said Yunus would discuss several significant bilateral issues with Qatar on the sideline of the Earthna Summit.
He is scheduled to return home in the early hours of Apr 25.
Foreign Advisor Touhid Hossain and Power Advisor Fouzul Kabir Khan are among the chief advisor’s entourage.
About the power advisor’s participation in the visit, the press secretary said, “We have a long-term LNG agreement with Qatar. Alongside visa issues, he will discuss economic cooperation between the countries. There will also be a business conference with Qatari entrepreneurs on Apr 23."
Shafiqul added that the chief advisor would give an interview to Qatar-based Al Jazeera channel.
A two-and-a-half-hour conference, chaired by the chief advisor, on the Rohingya issue will be held in Qatar, he said, adding that many people involved globally in the affair will attend it.
“It is a preparatory meeting for the UN-sponsored Rohingya conference to be held in September," he added.
Asked whether there will be a discussion on extending facilities to expatriate Bangladeshi workers in Qatar, the press secretary said: "We have had this plan for a long time. Chief Advisor’s Special Envoy Lutfey Siddiqi is talking to the United Arab Emirates on the matter so that the country's market becomes open for us. We are looking at sending more workers from Bangladesh.
“Similarly, we are working in other countries where Bangladeshi workers can get work."
He highlighted that the government's priority is to ensure that more and more workers can go to the global labour markets with better wages.
The chief advisor’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder told Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) that the interim prime minister is paying the visit at the invitation of Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani.
The chief advisor is also likely to hold a meeting with the Qatar emir besides the summit.
The BSS wrote that four female athletes accompanied the head of government for the first time in the country’s history.
The four are footballers Afida Khandaker and Shaheda Akter Ripa and cricketers Sumaiya Akhter and Sharmin Sultana.
The conference, which will be held for the second time, will highlight Qatar's commitment to harnessing its traditional culture and unique environmental diversity to advance sustainable development in its humid and dry weather.
