Agitating students of Government Titumir College have blocked railway tracks at Dhaka's Mohakhali over the demand for upgrading their institution to a university, causing a nationwide rail communication shutdown via Tongi Junction.
Due to the blockade, several trains are stuck at various stations including Kamalapur, causing inconvenience to passengers.
The Kamalapur Railway Station Master Md Anwar Hossain said as of 5:45pm on Monday, six trains were stopped, with several others unable to enter Dhaka.
"Trains including the Silkcity Express, Kalni, Jamalpur Commuter, and Sirajganj Express have not departed yet. Similarly, these trains are stuck at various stations on their way to Dhaka."
Earlier on Monday, around 12:30pm, protesters blocked the main gate of the college with bamboo, obstructing the road.
Later, at 3:40pm, a group of students marched to the Mohakhali rail crossing. Students participating in a hunger strike were at the forefront of the procession in wheelchairs.
When students sat down on the tracks at Mohakhali rail crossing, the Upakul Express from Kamalapur was halted near Nakhalpara.
It was later reversed to the Tejgaon station.
From Dhaka, 43 pairs of intercity and 25 pairs of mail and commuter trains operate daily.
Earlier, OC Jaynal Abedin of Dhaka Railway Police told bdnews24.com that rail traffic had been halted since 4pm due to a blockade on the railway lines in the Mohakhali area.
Initially, protesters blocked both sides of a level crossing, but after a police request, they opened one side. However, the students later blocked both sides again.
Banani Police Station OC Rasel Sarwar said, "Due to the occupation of the rail crossing by Titumir College students, rail traffic has been stopped. However, vehicles travelling from Jahangir Gate to Banani and vice versa are using the flyover for transit."
