A Dhaka court has questioned a suspect over allegations that a Dhaka University student and her friend were beaten inside a private hostel, but the hostel director claimed that “nothing like that” ever happened.
Razia Begum, director of Swapnonibash Hostel, said this before Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman’s court on Sunday.
The student from Shamsun Nahar Hall of Dhaka University had visited Swapnonibash Hostel as a guest of a Tejgaon College student.
Later, a case was filed against Razia with Mirpur Model Police, accusing her of detaining and assaulting the two young women.
Razia was arrested at the hostel near Tejgaon College on Tuesday. The next day, she was sent to jail, with her bail hearing first scheduled for Thursday and then deferred to Sunday. She was produced in court for the hearing.
Her lawyer, Rahim Mia, sought bail, saying the charges -- attempted murder and theft -- were “non-bailable” but unfounded.
On the theft charge, he said: “They alleged Tk 8,000 was stolen, yet the complainant said she went to pay rent to the manager. The manager said the money was offered but not received.
“Why would she steal what was voluntarily given?” He also dismissed the attempted murder charge as “baseless”.
The court then asked Razia if guests were allowed in the hostel.
Razia replied, “Yes, but an additional Tk 400 must be paid to stay overnight. The student came on Sept 27 and didn’t pay, saying she had family problems.”
When the judge asked if the guest had been evicted, Razia said: “No. She wanted to leave, but I didn’t let her go for safety reasons. She later called some boys to the hostel.”
The judge then asked, “Why did you beat her?”
Razia replied, “I didn’t. Nothing of that sort happened.”
At this point, her lawyer Rahim Mia interjected, saying: “Gen Z girls have a different kind of influence. You’ll see, women lawyers and female staff often exert more sway -- that’s what happened here.”
Following the hearing, the court granted Razia interim bail on a Tk 1,000 bond until the next date, confirmed by her lawyer Sharmila Sharma.
“We’ll file the bail bond today, and expect her release tomorrow,” she said.
The case alleges that the hostel had not informed the Tejgaon College student that guests had to pay an additional fee. When her Dhaka University friend visited around 9pm on Tuesday, a dispute arose after Tk 400 was demanded as rent. During the altercation, the complainant said both students were assaulted, detained, and Tk 8,000 was snatched from them.
