None of the 12 officials of the Roads and Highways Department, who were ordered to work to ease traffic congestion at the Bishwa Road intersection in Brahmanbaria, have complied with a directive given by the road transport advisor.
Instead, the department’s temporary office at the site remained locked throughout Thursday.
On Wednesday, Road Transport Advisor Fouzul Kabir Khan inspected the damaged highway from Ashuganj roundabout to the Bishwa Road intersection and directed the officers overseeing repairs to work from a temporary base in Brahmanbaria.
He said, “This is your camp office. There is no need to go to Dhaka. You have to solve the problem from here. If you neglect your duties, you will be dismissed.”
A government official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told bdnews24.com that none of the officials were present there all day, and the temporary office was locked until 3:30pm.
Work to upgrade the 51km road from Ashuganj River Port to Akhaura Land Port to four lanes began in 2020, with Indian contractor AFCONS Infrastructure Ltd managing the project.
However, work remains incomplete even after five years due to different complications.
The highway’s condition has deteriorated further since the contractor halted work after the July Uprising.
Drivers and passengers now face daily delays, with 12km taking four to six hours to travel amid numerous potholes and chronic traffic.
On Wednesday, Advisor Fouzul himself was stuck in traffic for over two hours before boarding a motorcycle to reach the Bishwa Road intersection.
The Roads and Highways Department has begun temporary repair work on the potholes at the Ashuganj roundabout and the Bishwa Road intersection.
