A Dhaka court has deferred the date for submitting a report on whether model Meghna Alam’s seized mobile phone and laptop contain any “anti-state material” in a fraud and extortion case filed with Dhanmondi Police.

As the investigation officer failed to submit the report on the scheduled date on Tuesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman set a new date of Nov 11.

Sub-Inspector Abul Bashar of the Prosecution Division confirmed that Meghna’s passport plea had been turned down.

On Jul 29, Meghna filed an application with the court seeking the return of her passport, MacBook, mobile and laptop. That day, the court ordered an examination of her devices.

On Tuesday, she appeared in court on the scheduled date, carrying a copy of the Quran in her hands.

Her lawyer Mohsin Reza Palash pleaded for the return of her passport.

He told the court, “Meghna is a leadership trainer. She frequently travels abroad to attend different programmes. We request that her passport be returned.”

Opposing the plea, assistant public prosecutor Harun Or Rashid said: “This is a highly sensational case, and it is still under investigation.

“It must also be determined which businessmen and diplomats she blackmailed using her laptop and mobile. If the passport is returned, she may flee abroad. For the sake of investigation, I request the application be rejected.”

The court later rejected Meghna’s plea for the return of her passport and set a new date for submission of the forensic report.
