Annisul Huq ahead in Dhaka North

Awami League-endorsed Annisul Huq is ahead by 132,461 votes in the race to win Dhaka North City Corporation mayor election.

Huq with his ‘table clock’ electoral symbol bagged 442,871 votes until 4:10am on Wednesday, according to the results announced from 1,044 voting centres.

His main rival, the BNP-backed mayor aspirant Tabith Mohammed Awal, has pulled out after the party alleged massive rigging and boycotted the city polls.

He, however, received 310,410 votes for his ‘bus’ symbol.

Bikalpadhara Bangladesh’s Mahi B Chowdhury with ‘eagle’ bagged 12,809 votes.

Voting took place at 1,093 polling centres in the Dhaka North City Corporation from 8am until 4pm on Tuesday. 

The counting of votes is still on. Returning Officer Shah Alam is announcing the results of the centres at his office at the capital’s Agargaon.

 

The election to the Dhaka North City Corporation took place on Tuesday along with Dhaka South and Chittagong city corporations.

 

There are about 2.35 million voters in Dhaka North.

 

Altogether 16 people were contending for the office of the mayor of Dhaka North in its first election after the Dhaka City Corporation’s bifurcation in November 2011.

 

The other contenders are AYM Qamrul Islam (cricket bat), Qazi Md Shahidullah (hilsa) Sheikh Md Fazle Bari Masud (orange), Shamsul Alam Chowdhury (cheetah), Moazzem Hossain Khan (flask), Chowdhury Erad Ahmed Siddiqui (gourd), Md Anisuzzaman Khokon (dish antennae), Md Jaman Bhuiyan (table) and Sheikh Shahiduzzman (matchbox).

 

In Dhaka North, 281 are contesting for general councillor posts in 36 wards, while 89 are vying for 12 wards reserved for women councillors.
