Law Advisor Asif Nazrul says justice has been done with the awarding of the death penalty to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity, adding that another letter will be sent to India for her extradition.
Hasina and her former home affairs minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were sentenced to death in a case over attempts to suppress the July Uprising at the International Crimes Tribunal on Monday.
The third suspect in the case, former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, received a reduced sentence of five years in prison after he turned state witness.
The International Crimes Tribunal indicted the suspects in the case by combining several incidents, such as incitement, ordering mass killings, the burning of bodies of those killed, opening fire from helicopters, and others that occurred during last year’s July Uprising across the country.
Nazrul gave his immediate reaction at the Secretariat, saying: “Today is a historic day for Bangladesh. Today is the greatest instance of justice being established on Bangladeshi soil.”
“Sheikh Hasina, the brutal murderer responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people, the mutilation of thousands of people, the serious injuries, and the disabilities during the July Uprising, has been sentenced to death.
“Her closest aide, former home minister Asaduzzaman, has been sentenced to death. Today is another victory day for the July Uprising.”
The law advisor also reacted to the verdict on Facebook, writing: “A death sentence for Hasina. Thank you, Alhamdulillah.”
Nazrul told the media: “Today, I am especially reminded of those who lost their lives during the July Uprising. Especially Abu Sayed, Mugdho, Wasim, Yamin, Anas, Riya Gop. I think their departed souls will find some peace today.
“Personally, I am satisfied with this, but not surprised. The apparent, irrefutable, strong and detailed evidence of crimes against humanity committed by Hasina and her associates should be given the maximum punishment if tried in any court of the world.”
Stating that efforts would be made to bring Hasina back from India to face her death sentence, he said: “We will write a letter to India again for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina.
“If India continues to shelter this mass murderer, then India must understand that this is a very reprehensible act of hostility against Bangladesh and the people of Bangladesh.”
“These trials will continue as long as we are here. I hope that whichever government is elected in the future will not shy away from the important responsibility of these trials under any circumstances.”
