Court orders fresh autopsy on actress Lopa

Once a child star, she was widely known for playing ‘Tuni’ in Humayun Ahmed’s television drama - 'Ei Shob Dinratri'.

Her body was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her in-laws home in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on Oct 16.

The case filed by Lopa’s mother Razia Sultana accuses the actress’ husband, Ali Amin, and both his parents.

Her body was exhumed in the presence of an executive around noon and sent to the Sir Salimullah Medical College for fresh autopsy on Thursday, said Gulshan Police ASI Billal Hossain.

Police reported that there were wounds on the right side of her neck and on her right wrist.

The report of her autopsy said the 35-year-old had hung herself but her mother rejected the finding and pleaded for re-examination.

Dhaka’s Deputy Commissioner accepted her plea and ordered the body to be exhumed on Nov 26.

A committee led by a professor of the Sir Salimullah Medical College was tasked to supervise it.

Lopa’s husband Amin was arrested soon after the case was filed. He claimed he was outside when Lopa hung herself for a fight they were having over the ownership of their Gulshan apartment.

But Razia Sultana said Amin is a drug addict, who used to physically assault Lopa regularly, while his parents ‘indulged’ him.

She claimed her daughter was suffocated to death and hung from the ceiling fan anytime between 2:30pm and 3pm, said the case details.

Child star Lopa came to be adored as ‘Tuni’, who falls ill in the story of the Humayun Ahmed drama that used to be aired on Bangladesh Television in the 90s.

Numerous of her fans had written to Ahmed urging him to keep ‘Tuni’ alive in 'Ei Shob Dinratri'.
