After the Eid-ul-Fitr and SSC examinations, the primary, secondary and higher secondary-level educational institutions in Bangladesh are going on an extended holiday.

They will remain closed for almost the entire first half of June owing to a combined Eid-ul-Azha and summer break this time.

The institutions returned to educational activities at the beginning of April following over a month-long holiday for Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.

The SSC and equivalent examinations after the opening have also disrupted classes in educational institutions used as exam centres.

According to the current academic year calendar issued on Dec 23, Eid-ul-Azha and summer vacations in government and private secondary and lower secondary schools will start from Jun 1 until Jun 19.

The Eid-ul-Azha holidays will be slightly less for government and private colleges. It will run from Jun 3 to Jun 12 per the college calendar issued on Jan 5.

Apart from the weekly off, the institutions will remain closed for eight days.

In the case of government primary schools, Eid-ul-Azha and summer vacations will be slightly different.

The break in these schools will begin on Jun 3 and run until Jun 23, according to the primary education calendar approved by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education on Dec 30.

Public and private Ebtedayee, Dakhil, Alim, Fazil and Kamil madrasas will remain closed for 14 days from Jun 3 to Jun 16 during Eid-ul-Azha and summer vacations, according to the calendar issued on Dec 30.

The SSC and Dakhil Vocational-level educational institutions will be closed from Jun 1 to Jun 19 per the academic calendar of the Technical Education Board.

The HSC Vocational, BM and BMT levels will remain closed from Jun 3 to 19.

However, the education ministry ordered all government and private schools, colleges and universities to remain open on May 17 and 24, two Saturdays before the start of the break.

The ministry’s Secondary and Higher Education Division issued the directive following instructions to keep government, semi-government, autonomous and private offices open on these two days, officials said.
