Another child has died in hospital following the Bangladesh Air Force fighter jet crash at Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Diabari, bringing the death toll to 29.
Nafis, 9, who had suffered burns to 95 percent of his body, died in the intensive care unit of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery at around 12:15am on Wedesday, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
He was one of 44 patients being treated at the institute.
The tragedy occurred on Monday afternoon when a fighter jet went down on the school campus, killing or injuring more than 150 people, most of them children.
A further 67 people are still receiving treatment at hospitals across the capital.
Most admitted patients are suffering from extensive burn wounds.
Among those in hospital care, 10 are believed to be out of danger. The condition of 30 others remains uncertain, while 10 are in a critical state, Sayedur Rahman, chief advisor’s special assistant for health affairs, said at press conference on Tuesday.
Currently, 43 patients are admitted to the Burn Institute, 21 at Dhaka Combined Military Hospital (CMH), and one each at Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital, Shaheed Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital, and Uttara Modern Medical College Hospital.
Among the dead, 22 bodies have been identified and handed over to their families.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is seeking relatives of six unidentified bodies kept at the CMH morgue.
A ministry media statement issued onTuesday night said the identities of the six bodies remain unknown.
“Under the supervision of health ministry experts, samples have been collected from the bodies for DNA profiling),” it read.
“The DNA profiling will soon be carried out at the CID laboratory.”
Citing Sayedur, the statement urged families of missing persons whose names do not appear on the published lists of injured and dead to visit the CID office in Malibagh to provide DNA samples.
It noted that so far, only one family has submitted a sample.
The ministry said the identification process will be expedited if relatives of the missing come forward quickly.
“We urge everyone’s cooperation in this process,” it added.
