A sixth-grade schoolgirl has been found bound inside a locked classroom in Kushtia’s Mirpur Upazila, in an incident that has triggered allegations of rape and a police investigation.
Kushtia General Hospital doctors, who later treated the 11-year-old, said preliminary examinations indicated signs consistent with sexual assault.
According to Mirpur Police chief Md Shahidul Islam, the girl was recovered around 8pm from a room on the third floor of a school building at Chatargacha.
At the hospital, Resident Medical Officer Dr Hossain Imam said the child was first referred from Mirpur Upazila Health Complex and brought to the hospital around 1am on Friday.
“She was admitted to the gynaecology ward as per procedure, and we tried to collect information from family members. However, no one was willing to provide details,” he said.
“Later on Friday morning, doctors from the gynaecology department conducted the necessary examinations and collected samples. They have reported preliminary signs of assault,” he added.
Recounting the incident, the girl’s grandmother said the child left home for school around 9am on Thursday but did not return in the afternoon when other students came back.
“When I asked other children, they said everyone had left school together,” she said.
After failing to find her, classmates went back to the school in the afternoon.
They reportedly asked the school’s night guard Hamidul to open the locked building, but he refused to hand over the key, she added.
Later in the evening, family members forced open the school gate after obtaining the key and entered the building.
“We found sandals on the ground floor, her school bag on the second floor, and on the third floor, my granddaughter was found with her hands and feet tied and tape over her mouth,” the grandmother said.
She added that the child was first taken to Mirpur Upazila Health Complex and then referred to Kushtia General Hospital.
The girl’s aunt alleged that the night guard had refused earlier requests by students to open the school.
“This clearly suggests he knows something about what happened to our girl,” she said.
School assistant headmaster Abul Kalam Azad said the institution had held its SSC-2026 farewell event on Thursday from 10am to 1pm.
“As there were no regular classes, students left after the event. Teachers also left after finishing routine work,” he said.
“Later we heard that around 8pm, the school was unlocked and a sixth-grade student was rescued from a third-floor room in a bound and injured condition. It is deeply distressing,” he added.
Officer Shahidul said medical reports indicated bruises and injury marks on different parts of the child’s body.
“From the condition in which she was recovered, it is clear that a serious offence has taken place,” he said.
He added that a case is being prepared and those involved will be arrested soon.
