Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has installed 450 solar-powered LED streetlights in the Bhashantek slum as part of efforts to ensure “citizen safety and uninterrupted mobility”.

The initiative was launched on Sunday evening near Gate 2 of Bhashantek Benarasi Palli, where DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan switched on the newly installed lights, according to a media statement.

He said DNCC was working continuously to implement the premier’s commitments, adding that the solar streetlight project was part of that pledge.

“These lights have been installed with your money. They are your property, and you must take responsibility for their maintenance,” he told residents.

He also said priority would be given to resolving the problems faced by low-income communities.

Prime Minister’s Assistant Private Secretary Abdur Rahman Sani said, “We want this area to be free from drugs, theft and mugging.”

According to the statement, the project promotes the use of renewable solar energy and reduces dependence on the national power grid.

Around 150,000 low-income residents in Bhashantek are expected to benefit, as narrow lanes and internal roads are now illuminated, improving night-time movement and safety.

Authorities said the lights would particularly enhance security for women, children and the elderly, while discouraging theft, mugging and drug-related activities inside the settlement.

The project is expected to save around 58,320kWh of electricity annually.
