Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said the law and order situation in Bangladesh has “significantly improved” in the last few months.
Speaking at a briefing after a meeting of the law and order core committee on Sunday, he said: “If the current trend continues, there should be no obstacles to holding the upcoming general election.”
The meeting saw participation from district commissioners, RAB, and Army personnel.
Jahangir said the law-enforcing agencies’ assessments looked into their operations, and compared the current situation with past years.
“Based on their feedback, it’s clear that the situation has improved considerably compared with the past,” he said.
Addressing recent clashes at the NCP rally in Gopalganj, he said: “I’m not denying that an incident occurred. This is politics, a lot of things can happen here.
“We’ve experienced similar events ourselves and such occurrences take place at Dhaka University as well. What matters most is whether appropriate action is taken afterwards, and we are taking action.”
When asked about the Army allegedly firing shots in Gopalganj, he said taking such action “depends on the situation”.
The advisor was also questioned about the “full-scale” strike called by the Awami League in response to the Gopalganj clashes.
He in turn asked a rhetorical question on whether the government had managed to contain the situation.
On the current law-enforcing agencies’ capability of overseeing a fair election following such unrest, Jahangir replied: “Why shouldn’t they be able to? The security forces still have time to prepare. Training is under way. If God wills, there will be no difficulties in conducting the election.”
He went on to describe questions surrounding the law-enforcing agencies as a “reflection of the freedom of expression”.
“This question you’ve asked is part of the beauty of free speech. But I would request you to refrain from using indecent or attacking language. The beauty of a democracy is in speaking the truth, it cannot be based on lies,” he said.
He noted that the security forces are vigilant to ensure that criminals are held accountable and that no one involved in offences will be granted impunity.
Jahangir also assured that mass arrests are “no longer taking place”, and only those who are committing crimes are being arrested.
