Quake ‘tilts’ ex-mayor Manjur’s seven-storey building in Chattogram

Ten families live inside the building, which also houses a diabetes care centre on the ground floor

A seven-storey building in Chattogram has “tilted” towards a neighbouring structure following a 5.7-magnitude earthquake.

The building, located on Miyabari Road in Mansurabad under Double Mooring Police Station, is owned by former Chattogram City mayor M Manjur Alam.

Station chief Babul Azad told bdnews24.com on Friday, “Residents say the seven-storey building, owned by former city mayor Manjur has leaned towards the next building after the quake. We went to the site with the Fire Service after receiving the report.

“Some say it was already leaning while others say the earthquake caused the tilt,” he added.

The Chattogram divisional control room of the Fire Service said 10 families live in the building, which also houses a diabetes screening care centre on the ground floor.

Fire officials said the building had a pre-existing tilt but may have shifted further following the tremor, echoing local accounts.

The quake, measured at 5.7 on the Richter scale, struck at 10:38am with its epicentre in Madhabdi of Narsingdi, close to Dhaka.

It was the deadliest earthquake in decades, killing six people, including children, in three districts and injuring more than 100.

Although Dhaka experienced notable damage, Chattogram city has reported no major impact apart from the leaning building.
