Bangladesh’s Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Chattogram, Khulna and Barishal divisions as active south-west monsoon winds continue to intensify.
In a special bulletin on Saturday, the Met Office warned of “heavy to very heavy” rainfall over the next 24 hours starting from 10am, with the southern coastal and hilly regions facing the most risk.
It also warned of possible landslides in hilly areas of Chattogram due to intense downpours, along with temporary urban flooding in parts of Chattogram city.
Very heavy rainfall is defined as exceeding 88mm over 24 hours. Rainfall between 44mm and 88mm is considered heavy, while lighter showers are classified in lower ranges down to 1mm, according to the official scale.
The Met Office has also advised all four maritime ports to continue hoisting Local Warning Signal No. 3, which was issued on Thursday, as weather over the Bay of Bengal remains unstable.
Forecast predicts rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds in most areas of the Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and in many places across Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Mymensingh.
Moderate to very heavy rains are on the cards in different parts of the country.
“Scattered to widespread rainfall is likely across Bangladesh over the next seven days,” said Meteorologist Omar Faruk.
The rains follow a relatively dry start to the monsoon season. With the monsoon trough now deepening over the country, weather officials say rainfall intensity could pick up, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable hilly zones.
