A doctor has been detained in Dhaka’s Khilgaon after allegedly leading an assault on two traffic policemen at Dhaka’s Khilgaon rail crossing over an argument involving signals.
The incident occurred around 3pm when Assistant Sub-Inspector (SI) Rabiul Hasan and Constable Rabiul Islam were attacked and later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Motijheel Traffic Division Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Fazlul Karim said the doctor, identified as Mugda Medical College Hospital medical officer Mohammad Anwar Hossain, became angry when his car was briefly held at the signal.
“He argued with my officers, accused them of taking bribes, and threatened to teach them a lesson before leaving,” Fazlul said.
Sometime later, the doctor returned with 10–12 men on four to five motorcycles. They beat the two traffic policemen with punches and kicks, he added.
Deputy Commissioner Dewan Jalal Uddin Chowdhury said the attackers first kicked Constable Rabiul in the groin before repeatedly punching and kicking him. When ASI Rabiul intervened, he too was beaten.
Police later detained Anwar and handed him over to Khilgaon police.
SI Md Gulzar Hossain said the doctor admitted to arguing with the policemen, which escalated into the assault.
“We are investigating to identify the others involved,” he said.
Legal action will be taken over the assault, officers said.
