A Jhenaidah court has sentenced four people to death and four others to life imprisonment in the murder case of Sub-Inspector (SI) Mirajul Islam, 13 years after the incident, while seven other accused have been acquitted.
Public Prosecutor (PP) SM Mashiur Rahman said Jhenaidah Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 Judge Mahbub Alam announced the verdict in the presence of one accused on Monday.
The death sentences were handed down to Amjad Hossain, his brother Liaqat Hossain, Akkas Ali, alias Buro Akkas, and Alam Sheikh.
Those sentenced to life imprisonment are Shahin, identified by a single name, Mohammad Sagar, Nuru Khan, and Monir Hossain. Among them, all the accused are absconding, apart from Amjad.
Citing the case dossier, Mashiur said that on the night of Aug 23, 2011, a group of people killed Mirajul, the former in-charge of Jhenaidah Dakbangla Police Camp.
Later, while attempting to flee with Mirajul's motorcycle, the group suffered a crash outside the city's Bus Owners' Association Office. As police arrived at the scene, the riders fled.
The following day, Mirajul's body was found in a pond in Sadar Upazila, with his limbs tied.
The then inspector of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, Rafiqul Islam, filed a murder case.
Mashiur added that about two and a half months after the incident, police uncovered the motive behind the murder. His pistol and mobile phone were also recovered.
Later, police arrested Moktar Hossain alias Bhadu, Liaqat, Amjad, Alam, his wife Padma Begum, Akkas, and Abdur Rahim on charges of involvement in the incident.
Based on information obtained during their interrogation, police said that Nuru, the leader of a robbery gang, along with his associates Saheb Ali, Rana, and Sohag, were directly involved in Mirajul’s murder.
On the day of the incident, Saheb struck Mirajul’s motorcycle from behind and threw him off. The robbers then killed him to steal his pistol, bullets, and motorcycle.
After investigating the case, police filed a chargesheet in the court accusing 15 people on Jan 28, 2012.
After recording the testimonies, the court sentenced four of the accused to death and four others to life imprisonment, 13 and a half years after the incident, according to the state lawyer.
