Rail communication on the Mymensingh–Jamalpur route has resumed after a Brahmaputra Express power car derailment disrupted services for around three and a half hours.
The incident briefly halted train movement along the corridor before recovery operations cleared the line.
Services returned to normal shortly after 12:30pm on Wednesday when a rescue train recovered the derailed power car, said Palash Banerjee, a sub-inspector at Mymensingh Railway Police Station.
Earlier, around 9:15am, the Dhaka-bound Brahmaputra Express from Jamalpur reached the Tinkona Pukurpar of Mymensingh city when the wheels of its power car jumped the tracks with a loud bang.
A relief train dispatched from the locomotive shed later also derailed near the station while heading to the site.
The rescue crew then detached one carriage and proceeded to the location, where they recovered the derailed power car.
The prolonged suspension of train services left passengers stranded and frustrated.
Sharmeen Sultana, one of those on board, said she had been waiting nearly three hours with her child gasping in the heat, with no fans or proper toilet facilities on the train.
"I boarded for a safe journey and ended up in trouble instead. Engine failures, fires, derailments -- these are routine on this route.
“The government should pay attention to trains in the public interest," she said.
Fellow passenger Shafiqul Islam said the route offers more hardship than comfort and that accidents have become daily occurrences.
He called for a double rail line between Dhaka and Jamalpur to ease the suffering of commuters.
Mymensingh Railway Senior Assistant Executive Engineer Nazmul Hasan confirmed all four wheels of the Brahmaputra Express power car had derailed.
An investigation will determine the cause of repeated disruptions on the route, he added.
