A court has summoned the commissioner of Rajshahi police for providing statements to the media while a suspect allegedly linked to the murder of a judge's son was in custody.
On Saturday, state counsel Ali Ashraf Masum said Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrates’ Court Judge Mamunur Rashid issued a notice on the matter.
The notification instructs Police Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian to appear before the court in person by Nov 19 to provide an explanation. The case hearing is scheduled for that day.
According to the notice, on Nov 13, Metropolitan and Sessions Judge Abdur Rahman had his son, Tawshif Rahman Sumon, fatally stabbed after an intruder entered their rented home.
The judge's wife, Tasmin Nahar Lucy, suffered serious injuries after being attacked with a knife with the intent to murder her. Following this, police arrested Limon Mia from the scene and admitted him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital afterwards.
Rahman started a murder case on Friday, naming 34-year-old Limon as the sole defendant in the killing.
Lawyer Ali Ashraf said, "It was subsequently seen in multiple media outlets that Limon, while in police custody, provided statements to print and electronic media outlets blaming the victim. This is a clear violation of the Supreme Court's directives issued in several cases, including Ayesha Siddika Minni vs State 39 BLD 470."
Gaziur Rahman, the spokesperson and additional police commissioner for the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said: "The court's instructions will be responded to within the stipulated time."
Rahman took charge as the Labour Court judge in Rajshahi a year ago. He was appointed Metropolitan Sessions Judge in October.
He lived with his wife and only son Tawshif, a ninth grader, on the fifth floor of a 10-storey building named “Spark View” in the city's Dabtala area.
