Residents of Dhaka and other parts of the country reported feeling tremors from a moderate earthquake early on Tuesday morning.
The quake measured 5.0 on the Richter scale, according to the Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
People across the country took to social media to post about the quake.
The monitoring centre said the earthquake struck at 6:29:36am on Tuesday and that its epicentre was 436km north-east of Dhaka in the Indian state of Manipur.
BMD Deputy Director Md Rubaiyat Kabir said on Tuesday afternoon: “There was no loss of life or damage to infrastructure as a result of the earthquake. Its epicentre was far away. Usually, there is no evidence of such damage from earthquakes of this magnitude.”
According to data from the monitoring centre, 32 earthquakes struck Bangladesh and its border areas between mid-February 2025 and Monday. The greater Sylhet area recorded the highest number, with 10.
