Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has called on people not to equate the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) with general elections, noting the stark differences in staffing and scale.
Following a meeting on law and order at the Secretariat on Tuesday, he said: "The DUCSU election cannot be conflated with the national election. Here, the presiding and polling officers are highly educated. But it won't be exactly like that at the national level. But it is definitely a model."
Responding to another question about the DUCSU polls, he said: "There are no problems; everyone is voting spontaneously."
He added that training for law enforcement and other agencies ahead of the parliamentary elections was a major focus of Tuesday’s meeting.
Pressed on the likelihood of a fair parliamentary elections, given ongoing violence and gruesome acts like bodies being exhumed and burned, he responded that the current situation would not hinder the process.
He said the election would be peaceful and fair.
“In the past, reports of such incidents reached us slowly. Now, technology allows us to receive information much faster, though some challenges remain.”
