The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested the mother and father of Faisal Karim Masud, the main suspect in the attack on Inqilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi.
Wing Commander MZM Intekhhab Chowdhury, director of RAB’s law and media wing, confirmed the development on Tuesday night.
The elite force recovered two firearms and one object resembling a pistol from Narsingdi. “One of the pistols is believed to have been used in the attack on Hadi,” the officer said.
In addition, two magazines loaded with 11 rounds of ammunition and a knife were recovered from the area near Faisal Karim’s sister’s house in Dhaka’s West Agargaon, according to the RAB.
A RAB media statement said, “At 11am on Friday, Faisal and an associate left the house on a motorcycle. CCTV footage shows Faisal, his associate, mother and sister retrieving items from a vacant space between two buildings at 4:05pm.
“At 4:20pm, Faisal and his associate left the area in a CNG-run autorickshaw. Based on intelligence and CCTV review, two magazines, 11 rounds of ammunition and a knife were recovered from the space.”
The RAB also seized 15 cheque books, six passports, 38 cheques from different banks, two mobile phones and a tablet from Faisal’s sister’s residence.
The attempted murder case was filed on Sunday night with the consent of Hadi’s family at Paltan Police Station. Inqilab Moncho Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber lodged the case.
Earlier arrests in the case include Faisal’s wife, girlfriend, brother-in-law, a man suspected of owning the motorcycle used in the attack, an associate known only as Kabir, and two individuals detained at the border for allegedly aiding Faisal’s escape.
Hadi rose to prominence during the July Uprising and the movement to ban the Awami League, and had announced his intention to contest in the parliamentary elections as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency.
He was attacked on Friday while carrying out public outreach at Bijoynagar. Assailants riding a moving motorcycle shot him while he was travelling in a rickshaw, with the bullet striking his head.
Gravely wounded, Hadi was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for surgery and later admitted to Evercare Hospital the same night.
Doctors described his condition as “extremely critical”. On Monday afternoon, he was flown to Singapore by air ambulance for further treatment.
