A man has died while in police custody in Cox’s Bazar’s Chakaria, prompting locals to surround the police station in protest.
Three policemen have been withdrawn in the wake of the incident.
On Friday, Chakaria Police Station chief Shafiqul Islam said, “A man named Durjoy Chowdhury died by suicide while in police custody. Three police officers have been withdrawn for negligence of duty.”
Those officers withdrawn are ASI Hanif Mia, and constables Mohi Uddin and Ishraq Hossain.
Durjoy, who worked as a computer operator at Chakaria Government Boys’ High School, was handed over to the police by his colleagues around 9pm on Thursday.
The school’s acting headteacher filed a case against him, accusing him of fraud and embezzlement of Tk 283,000.
In the early hours of Friday, police recovered his body hanging inside the Chakaria station. Police claimed he had taken his own life.
The death sparked protests from locals in the afternoon.
Kofil Uddin Ahmed, president of Chakaria Imam Association, said: “A judicial probe committee must be formed over this incident. How can a man die in a prison cell?
“There’s a place to keep detainees, why was he killed in remand? Was he tortured? Did he really hang himself, or was he hanged? The people of Chakaria demand answers.”
Assistant Superintendent of Police for Chakaria Circle, Abhijit Das, said: “Although the suicide could not be directly captured due to distance, CCTV footage shows Durjoy’s movements and activities in custody.”
When asked if there had been negligence by police, he replied that a committee was already investigating the matter.
Cox’s Bazar police spokesperson and Additional Superintendent of Police Jashim Uddin Chowdhury confirmed that an investigation committee has been formed on the orders of the district’s superintendent of police.
“An executive magistrate has conducted an inquest,” he added.
The investigation committee will determine the circumstances of the incident, and the post-mortem report will reveal the cause of death.
