The High Court has granted three months' bail to Shomi Kaiser, actress and former president of the e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB), in an attempted murder case filed with Dhaka's Uttara North Police Station in connection with an incident during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
The bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain issued the bail order on Tuesday.
Lawyer ABM Hamidul Mesbah represented Shomi in court.
Her legal team had moved the High Court with the bail petition on Dec 8.
Police arrested Shomi from a residence in Uttara on Nov 5. A Dhaka court sent her to jail on Nov 9, after her remand ended.
On Sept 29, Ishtiak Mahmud, a businessman filed an ‘attempt to murder’ case with Uttara North Police Station, claiming the suspects had tried to kill him on Jul 18 during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. Former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun was among the 126 suspects named in the case.
Gaan Bangla Television Managing Director Kaushik Hossain Taposh was named as suspect No. 9 and Shomi Kaiser as suspect No. 24.
After the change in government, several cases were filed against prominent cultural figures associated with the Awami League regime. Kaushik was also arrested in Uttara on Nov 4. Shomi was arrested the day after.
Shomi, the daughter of martyred intellectual Shahidullah Kaiser and former MP Panna Kaiser, was a popular actress in the 1990s and later moved into entertainment production.
She became involved in Awami League politics and served for many years as the president of the e-CAB and as an FBCCI director.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on Aug 5, Shomi resigned from her role at e-CAB on Aug 14.
Earlier this year, she had sought the party’s ticket to run for the Feni-3 constituency in the 12th national election, but did not receive it.
