The Chittagong University unit of Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal has boycotted the Victory Day programme, protesting the presence of pro-Vice-Chancellor Mohammed Shamim Uddin Khan.

The announcement of the boycott came during a discussion organised at the university’s Jarul Tola on Tuesday morning.

The Chhatra Dal leaders went up to the stage in the middle of the programme and announced their decision, which came about 12 hours after the student group suspended its siege of the university’s administrative building in protest of Shamim’s comments on the Liberation War on Dec 14.

Shamim had described the Pakistani’s Army killing of intellectuals in Bangladesh on the eve of its independence in 1971 an “absurd” narrative at a discussion marking Martyred Intellectual Day.

Leftist student groups joined with the JCD to form a platform called “All-Party Student Unity” to protest the remark. They staged an eight-hour siege of the administrative building on Monday.

Tensions rose further when the protesters faced off against Islami Chhatra Shibir, which called for the siege to be withdrawn, for hours on Monday.

The protest, however, had been suspended for the Victory Day celebration.

After paying tribute to the martyrs at the Liberation War sculpture at 10am, a victory procession ended at Jarul Tola after parading through some streets on the campus. The discussion began by observing a minute of silence in the memory of students martyred in the July Uprising. Prayers were also offered for them.

The JCD arrived at the venue with a procession and went up to the stage to announce their boycott.

The discussion continued peacefully after that.

Shamim urged the people of Bangladesh to remain united.
