Sajeeb Mia, who was arrested in a case filed at Dhaka's Airport Police Station on charges of involvement in extremism and terrorism in Malaysia, has given a “confessional statement” in court.
Another arrestee, Wasim Akram, has been placed on a 3-day remand.
On Monday, the investigation officer of the case, police's Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) Inspector KM Tariqul Islam, produced the two before the court and applied for their remand.
Sajeeb voluntarily agreed to give a confessional statement, which was recorded by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhazur Rahman, who then sent him to jail custody.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Rahman, after hearing the application to remand Wasim for seven days, ordered his remand for three days, according to Sub-Inspector (SI) SM Bakhtiar Khaled of the prosecution wing of the Airport Police Station.
On Jul 5, Inspector Md Abdul Baten of the Intelligence Branch of police's ATU filed a case with the Airport Police Station against 35 people on charges of being involved in extremism and terrorism while staying in Malaysia.
The case alleges, “The accused were inspired by the ideology of an internationally banned terrorist organisation in collusion with each other. They had been involved in terrorism while residing in Malaysia.
“They had been recruiting members and promoting through social media operated by some Bangladeshi citizens using Malaysian IP addresses.
“The accused were staying in Malaysia and conducting activities to create public panic in that country. Later, the Malaysian police arrested them from Apr 28 to Jun 21.
“The accused joined the terrorist organisation and raised funds through voluntary donations based on their financial capacity.
“They then transferred the money abroad using e-wallets and international money transfer services. As members, they also paid an annual subscription fee of 500 ringgit."
The complaint further added that Malaysian police have started the process of sending the arrestees to their respective countries in phases.
"Intelligence information suggests the suspects have been involved in terrorism and extremism in Bangladesh, carrying out activities aimed at the integrity, solidarity, independence, and sovereignty of the country, threatening public security, and creating panic in some sections of the public, with a possibility of terrorist attacks at different places at any time."
Earlier, the court granted remand to four Malaysian expatriates in the case.
Three of them were sent back to the country from Malaysia. They are Nazrul Islam Sohag, Mohammad Redwanul Islam, and Zahed Ahmed.
In addition, police arrested another person named only ‘Mahfuz’ from Cumilla.
