A fake website has used the bdnews24.com logo and layout again to spread yet another false news on Facebook.
The fraudulent website, denver-roofing.com, masquerades as a news site.
It had previously published a fake report involving Finance Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed.
This time, the fake news post was shared from a Facebook page named Jwfrh Hibbert.
Clicking the link redirects users to a webpage designed to mimic bdnews24.com, but the URL clearly reads denver-roofing.com.
However, attempting to access the denver-roofing.com homepage directly results in a blank page.
The fake website recently published a fabricated report targeting Summit Group Chairman Muhammed Aziz Khan, titled Central Bank of Bangladesh sues Muhammed Aziz Khan over statements he made on live television.
Previously, the same platform spread fake news about the finance advisor with a nearly identical headline: Central Bank of Bangladesh sues Salehuddin Ahmed over statements he made on live television.
Both articles featured the bdnews24.com masthead, but inconsistencies in design were apparent.
The reports were also shared from separate Facebook pages, yet both used the same profile and cover photos.
The profile photo on both pages contains three English words in two lines.
The top line, in larger font, reads “Blue”, while the bottom line, in smaller font, says “Live Easy”.
Both pages also list the same contact number, which includes China’s country code.
Comments under the fake post about Aziz Khan suggest that social media users have identified it as misleading.
A user named Rafat Faisal commented, “This is fake news… Stay away from it.”
Another user, Tashfin Ahmed Chowdhury, posted a similar warning.
According to the domain tracking site Who.is, the domain name denver-roofing.com is registered under a company called GMO Internet Group.
The site is currently marked as inactive with client transfer restrictions in place.
The domain was registered on Apr 23, 2024, last updated on Nov 30, 2023, and is set to expire on April 23, 2025.
The registration includes a contact number with Japan’s country code.
bdnews24.com’s Editor-in-Chief Toufique Imrose Khalidi said: “A few years ago, a clone site was created under the name bdsnews24.com to spread misinformation. The forgery was so precise that a casual reader could easily mistake it for bdnews24.com.”
“Our investigation at the time revealed that the fake site was created under the direct supervision of a key intelligence agency to damage our credibility. The aim was to make these falsehoods appear credible while tarnishing bdnews24.com’s reputation,” he added.
“We had urged intelligence agencies and government departments to take action, but unfortunately, no steps were taken.
“Now, we see a fresh attempt to smear our reputation,” Khalidi said.
Finance Advisor Salehuddin, who was falsely targeted in the previous fake report, told bdnews24.com on Friday that he was shocked to see his name linked to the bogus article.
“At first, I was surprised that bdnews24.com would write something like this. But after investigating, I realised it was not bdnews24.com. The report is entirely fake, false, and fabricated,” he said.
“This kind of fraudulent activity is a crime. I am outraged. The misuse of the internet for deception should not be tolerated. Those spreading misinformation against state institutions like the government and the finance ministry are enemies of Bangladesh. Their attempts to damage Bangladesh’s reputation at home and abroad will never succeed,” he added.
