Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been deployed at several key locations in Dhaka to help maintain law and order ahead of the arrival of slain political activist Sharif Osman Hadi's body from Singapore.
In a statement issued on Friday, the BGB announced the deployment of troopers in the airport area, Karwan Bazar, the Hotel InterContinental area and other important points across the city.
The deployment comes amid heightened security concerns following recent protests and incidents of violence in the capital triggered by the death of Hadi, the convenor of Inqilab Moncho who was shot in the Bijoynagar area on Dec 12.
Inqilab Moncho said the aircraft carrying his remains is scheduled to land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 6pm on Friday. From there, his coffin will be taken to the Dhaka University Central Mosque.
Hadi’s funeral prayer is expected to be held on Saturday afternoon in the Parliament area.
Airport Police Station chief Mobarak Hossain said “all necessary security measures” had been taken in and around the airport in preparation for the return of Hadi’s remains.
Hadi, who rose to prominence through the July Uprising and the movement to ban the Awami League, announced that he would contest the 13th parliamentary election as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency.
He was shot at close range on Dec 12 while travelling by rickshaw in Dhaka's Bijoynagar. Police said two assailants arrived on a motorcycle, opened fire and fled the scene.
He was initially taken in critical condition to Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being transferred to Evercare Hospital, where he was treated in intensive care.
On Dec 15, Hadi was flown to Singapore by air ambulance for advanced medical treatment. He later died there.
