Repeated clashes have broken out between two rival groups vying for dominance in Faridpur’s Saltha Upazila.
Thousands of people from at least 20 villages became involved in the clash, which lasted for about six hours.
More than 100 people from both sides were injured. At least 30 of them have been admitted to several hospitals, including Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
KM Maruf Hasan Russell, inspector (Investigation) of Saltha Police Station, said the clashes took place at three separate locations in the Baliya Bazaar area of Gatti Union from 6am on Saturday until around 11:45am.

Citing locals, police said that Jahid Matubbar and Nuru Matubbar of Gatti Union were involved in Awami League politics during the previous government’s tenure.
However, after the fall of the Awami League government in the July Uprising last year, both men joined the BNP and became desperate to take control of Gatti Union, which led to several clashes between the supporters of the two leaders.
In continuation of this, thousands of supporters from both sides clashed on Saturday morning, wielding traditional weapons such as shields, knives, spears, and fishing darts.

The conflict eventually spread to Baliya Bazaar, Kather Gatti and Baliya Gatti villages. People from at least 20 villages in the union, including Baliya Gatti, Aruakandi, Jhunakhali, Member Gatti, Bhabukdia, Shinhapratap, Gatti, Kanuir, Diapara, Joyjhamp, Aguldia, and Morhat, became involved.
The entire area turned into a battlefield during the clashes, with women and children running around for safety in panic.
Locals claim that at least 20 homes were vandalised during the conflict. Possessions, including livestock, were looted.

A man named Omar Faruk claimed that five of his cows were stolen.
Despite multiple attempts, neither Jahid nor Nuru could be reached for comment.
Officer Maruf Hasan said, “The clash started in the morning. After a long effort, it was possible to bring the situation under control around 11:45am.”
He added that additional police personnel have been deployed to maintain peace in the area.
