Eight light guns (LG), along with local weapons and ammunition have been recovered in a special joint drive conducted by police and RAB members in Chattogram’s Raozan.
No arrests have been reported until now.
The drive, conducted on the early hours of Thursday across different locations in the Upazila, has been named “Operation for the Peace of Raujan” by police.
On Thursday afternoon, Chattogram District Police Superintendent Md Saiful Islam Shantu said police, RAB, and River Police personnel are doing their best to “pacify” Raozan, and police are working towards building a safe Chattogram.
The joint drive, led by the district police, divided Raozan into seven zones.
Media outlets have reported at least 17 murders in Raozan over the past year.
However, police claim seven of the murders in Raozan were committed to “extend dominance”, while the others resulted from family disputes, extramarital affairs, and drug-related issues.
At the media briefing, officer Saiful said the district police are responsible for five zones of the operation, while the RAB is handling two areas in Kodolpur union and the municipal region.
Describing the drive, he said: “To ensure that no terrorist escapes, River Police and Rangamati district police have coordinated with the Chattogram Metropolitan Police checkposts along their borders and at the city’s entrances.”
Raozan Upazila has been in the news for different murders and political issues since the change of power on Aug 5, 2024.
Tensions have also risen due to clashes between two BNP factions.
When asked whether a political figure was involved in the recent spike in crimes in Raozan, officer Saiful said if criminals approach a politician, it raises questions about the extent to which the politician condones their misdeeds.
“We cannot hold a politician responsible for not getting any information while attempting to catch a criminal.
“If we find any involvement, we will also bring him to justice.”
After Sarwar Hossain Babla's murder in Chattogram on Nov 5, social media circulated messages implicating three named Sajjad, Raihan, and Imon.
Officer Saiful said Raihan is a suspect in seven murder cases. He also described a network of criminals who plan crimes and coordinate from jail, noting threats from abroad via foreign numbers.
Any murder threat is taken seriously, and police are actively investigating the messages and working to catch the suspects, he added.
SUDDEN CRACKDOWN
While investigating the murder of businessman and BNP activist Abdul Hakim, police reported the recovery of four foreign pistols, a revolver, a Chinese rifle looted from the police station, a shotgun, 49 rounds of Chinese rifle bullets, 17 rounds of shotgun cartridges, and 16 rounds of 7.65mm calibre pistol bullets from the Chowdhuryhat area of Noapara union on Nov 10.
Local weapons, yaba pills, and marijuana were also recovered at that time.
Police reported the recovery of different weapons in multiple drives conducted from Nov 16 to 18.
Officer Saiful said police operations fall into three categories: planned, sudden, and surprise.
“[On Wednesday night] we conducted a sudden operation. This is an ongoing effort. We are determined to ensure a safe Chattogram,” he added.
During the drive, 28 unregistered motorcycles and a truck were seized, and 37 cases were filed under the Motor Vehicle Ordinance.
Saiful shared information about the arrest of Md Tarek, Md Minarul Alam, and a robber named Ayub by Satkania Police Station. A foreign pistol and two rounds of ammunition have been recovered from them.
