A retired schoolteacher has been critically injured after his leg tendons were allegedly severed in an attack over a land dispute in Narsingdi’s Shibpur Upazila. Angry residents, incited by rumours of his death, later vandalised and set fire to the accused neighbour’s house.
The incident occurred on Friday night at Mogol Bari in Mollakanda village under Putia Union, according to Kohinoor Mia, chief of Shibpur Model Police Station.
The injured man, Abu Sayeed Mogol, 70, a retired teacher at Shashpur Kazi Mofiz Uddin High School, is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of a Dhaka hospital.
His daughter Rokeya Lipi said the family had long been in dispute with neighbour Swapan Mogol over a piece of land.
She alleged that when she went to the disputed property on Thursday morning, Swapan obstructed and assaulted her. Hearing her screams, her father rushed to the scene, where Swapan and his brother Kiran Mogol attacked him with sharp weapons, cutting the tendons in both his legs.
Locals rescued him and took him to Shibpur Upazila Health Complex before he was transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
On Friday night, rumours spread that Abu Sayeed had died while undergoing treatment, prompting angry residents to vandalise and set fire to the houses of Swapan Mogol and his brother.
Police and fire service personnel brought the blaze under control. Tension gripped the area following the incident.
OC Kohinoor said the victim’s family had filed a complaint.
“A man was injured in connection with a land dispute. Police visited the scene after receiving the information,” he said.
“Later, upon receiving reports of vandalism and arson at the accused’s house, police and Fire Service teams went to the spot and brought the fire under control. The situation is now normal.”
