The lawyer representing ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her home minister Asaduzzaman Khan has alleged that Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman testified against them at the International Crimes Tribunal due to personal enmity and malice.
The cross-examination of Mahmudur was concluded in front of a single bench of the tribunal composed of Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud on Wednesday.
Mahmudur had begun testifying in front of the bench on Monday. His testimony continued into the first half of Tuesday, followed by the start of the cross-examination.
Amir Hossain, the state-appointed lawyer representing Hasina and Khan, conducted the cross-examination. He questioned Mahmudul on each allegation raised in his lengthy testimony.
Mahmudur had cited several books he had written as relevant to his testimony. These are “Hasina’s Fascism Seen from Exile”, “Mother of the Disappeared”, “The Political History of Muslim Bengal” and “The Rise of Indian Hegemon in South Asia”.
Amir brought up these books to Mahmudur in his cross-examination, stating: “You have written the books out of hatred towards former prime minister Sheikh Hasina while leaving out her good deeds.”
Mahmudur denied the claim, saying: “The book ‘The Rise of Indian Hegemon in South Asia’ was written as my PhD thesis. No one writes a PhD thesis out of hatred.”
Amir then said, “You have testified against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal due to personal enmity and malice.”
Mahmudur also denied the claim.
After the cross-examination ended at 1:20 pm, the tribunal adjourned. National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam is scheduled to testify in the case this afternoon.
The tribunal's Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam told reporters that the testimony of 46 people had concluded so far. Nahid will testify in the afternoon as the 47th witness in the case, he said.
The testimonies may then conclude with the testimony of the case’s investigating officer.
