Bangladesh has reported three dengue-related deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing this year’s total toll to 233.
According to Monday’s bulletin from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 857 new patients were hospitalised due to the Aedes mosquito-borne disease in the past day, taking the total number of admissions this year to 55,416.
The DGHS also reported the dead included a man aged 60, a woman aged 40, and a 7-year-old girl.
They were receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Mugda Medical College Hospital, and the DNCC Dedicated COVID Hospital.
September recorded the highest monthly admissions this year, with 15,866 patients, including 76 deaths. Between Oct 1-13, as many as 8,074 patients were admitted, and 35 deaths were reported.
Earlier in July, 10,684 patients were admitted, while January saw 1,161, February 374, March 336, April 701, May 1,773, June 5,951, and August 10,496 hospitalisations.
Deaths in July reached 41, while January recorded 10, February three, April seven, May three, June 19, and August 39. No deaths were recorded in March.
Among the newly admitted patients in the past 24 hours, 285 were from Dhaka’s two city corporations, while 134 were from other districts of Dhaka Division, 39 from Mymensingh, 87 from Chattogram, 60 from Khulna, 76 from Rajshahi, 7 from Rangpur, 163 from Barishal, and 6 from Sylhet.
At the moment, 2,622 dengue patients are undergoing treatment in hospitals across the country, including 963 in Dhaka hospitals and 1,659 outside the capital.
The health directorate has been recording dengue-related admissions and deaths since 2000. The highest number of hospitalisations was 321,179 in 2023, with 1,705 deaths, marking the deadliest year to date.
