The Amar Bangladesh Party, or AB Party, has officially been registered as a political party, receiving the 'eagle' as its election symbol.
The registration was granted by the Election Commission, or EC, on Wednesday, following a directive from the High Court, according to EC Secretary Shafiul Azim.
The party is now officially registered under the Representation of the People Order, with registration number 50, as per the EC notification.
Formed in 2020 by former reformists from Jamaat-e-Islami, the AB Party had to meet specific requirements, including establishing a central office, forming committees in one-third of the districts, and securing support from at least 200 voters in 100 Upazilas.
Although the party applied for registration ahead of the 12th parliamentary election, it was initially denied.
After a final hearing of a writ petition, the High Court ordered the EC on Monday to register the party immediately.
This brings the total number of registered political parties in Bangladesh to 45.
The AB Party's registration follows the cancellation of five other parties' registrations, including Jamaat-e-Islami, for failing to meet the necessary requirements.
