Thousands of people have taken part in the Akheri Munajat or the special prayer to wrap up the first phase of the Biswa Ijtema, one of the largest Muslim gatherings, organised at the bank of the Turag River in Gazipur’s Tongi. The devotees prayed for the unity, peace and welfare of the Muslims around the world.
Senior cleric Zubair Ahmed guided the Akheri Munajat on Sunday for his followers who identify themselves as "Shuraye Nizam".
The Munajat started at 9:11am and continued until 9:35am.
The devotees prayed for enlightenment, unity, peace, and salvation in this world and the afterlife for Muslims of the world. Besides, they prayed for Allah’s mercy and pardon for the wrong deeds.
The air filled with the devotees chanting "Ameen" at the Ijtema ground and its surroundings.
Earlier after the Fajr prayer, Maulana Abdur Rahman from India delivered the first sermon of the day and Bangladesh's Maulana Abdul Matin provided the Bangla translation.
Later, Indian preacher Maulana Ibrahim Dewla delivered the "Nasihat" sermon which was translated by Maulana Zubair.
People from the surrounding neighbourhoods started for the Ijtema ground after the Fajr prayer on Sunday to take part in the Munajat.
As the day rolled, the number of people on the highway surged.
Thousands of people were found on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway as the day broke.
Many of them walked 10km from Bhogra Bypass to the Ijtema ground as the huge crowd on the street prevented the transports from running. The Ijtema ground was full to the brim before the Munajat began.
At one point, people went to the nearby lanes and alleys, roads, rooftops of houses and offices, Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, and Kamarpara road to participate in the Munajat.
Some people participated sitting on the roofs of cars and even inside the boats floating on the Turag River.
Hundreds of women also participated in the Munajat staying at the rooftops of the nearby houses, offices, and factories.
As many as 3,200 foreign guests from Tablighi Jamaat in India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Malaysia, Philippines, Australia, United Kingdom, Indonesia, and China participated in the Ijtema this time.
Biswa Ijtema started on Friday. The first phase of the Ijtema took place from Jan 31 to Feb 2 with the Zubair faction of the Tablighi Jamaat participating.
The second phase for the Zubair faction will be held from Monday to Wednesday.
The second phase of the Biswa Ijtema will follow from Feb 14 to Feb 16, with the Saad faction taking part.
