A simple walk home from a madrasa has become a fight for survival for 13-year-old Imran Hossain.
The Hafez division student of Hazrat Sumaiya Madrasa in Fatullah, Narayanganj, had no part in the escalating feud over the jhut, local name for scrap textile, trade -- but he was thrust into crossfire.
Thursday morning, near Chandni Housing in Harihar Para, the boy tried to avoid the chaos when rival factions of the local Jubo Dal erupted into a violent clash.
Bullets flew. Explosions rang out. Terrified residents scattered, shops shuttered, and Imran ran into a narrow alley for cover.
A single shot pierced his left abdomen, and he collapsed in a pool of blood. Two others were also wounded in the melee.
Imran’s family rents a modest home in Chandni Housing. His father, Asmaul Hossain, is a garment factory worker from Jamalpur.
Imran, the middle of three children, had left home in the calm of the morning, unaware of the violence waiting ahead.
His elder sister Isha Moni said, “He tried to hide in the alley, but somehow reached its mouth -- and that’s when the bullet struck. He fell there, bleeding.”
He was rushed first to a private hospital in Panchboti, then Narayanganj General Hospital, before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Blood loss was severe, prompting doctors to prepare at least eight bags of blood.
Surgeons removed the bullet, but his condition remains critical.
“The doctors cannot give any assurance yet,” Isha said.
Witnesses said both sides fired indiscriminately and detonated a hand grenade.
Police said the clash was rooted in a longstanding feud over jhut supply: followers of district Jubo Dal secretary Moshiur Rahman Roni against supporters of Fatullah Thana Jubo Dal convener Masudur Rahman.
Additional Superintendent of Police Hasinuzzaman said, “We are still verifying which side fired. Police remain deployed, and legal action will follow.”
As of Thursday evening, no formal case had been filed.
