Police have arrested four suspects over the abduction of a schoolboy, who was rescued within an hour following steps taken by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Police say the gang has 10 to 12 members who lure teenage boys with drugs and other temptations before demanding ransom.
Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam disclosed the details at a press briefing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Centre on Thursday afternoon.
The arrestees are Tanvir Ahmed alias Fahim, 23, Ishraq Yamin Likhon, 20, Hasan Al Banna, alias Haslam, 21, and Mostafizur Rahman Punjo, 22.
On Tuesday, Khandaker Shamim, an employee of the Secretariat, approached the prime minister alleging that his school-going son had been abducted.
After hearing the complaint, Tarique called DC Masud and instructed him to take swift action.
Within an hour, police rescued the boy from an under-construction building in Khilgaon.
No one was arrested that day.
Masud said they identified the suspects based on the victim’s description and CCTV footage.
“The videos we found on the arrestees’ phones are shocking,” he said.
“They target someone and lure them in. They contact people on WhatsApp and Telegram, offering drugs.”
“In this case too, they contacted the boy on Telegram, offered something to tempt him, and he fell into the trap,” he added.
Masud said the group does not demand large sums but subjects victims to severe torture after abducting them.
At the same briefing, the DC also said two members of a gang robbing battery-powered autorickshaws while posing as passengers have been arrested.
On Feb 18, an auto-rickshaw driver named Md Raju was allegedly made unconscious with sedatives mixed in a drink and his vehicle was taken away by his passenger.
Following a case filed by garage owner Al Amin, police arrested two suspects, Nur Hossain and Nizam, identified by a single name, on Wednesday.
