A mechanical issue on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight (BG-148), operating on the Dubai–Chattogram–Dhaka route, has left 275 passengers stranded in Dubai.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner has remained grounded at Dubai International Airport since Wednesday due to the fault, which the Biman officials say may be linked to tyre pressure.
“This aircraft is relatively new in our fleet, usually operating long-haul routes to Toronto and Europe,” said PM Dastagir, Biman’s station manager in Dubai.
“Tyre pressure can sometimes drop under heavy load. We cleared the plane from Dubai on Tuesday, and no issues were flagged at the time.”
The flight had landed in Dubai at 10:50pm and was scheduled to depart for Chattogram at 12:05am on Wednesday.
It was then due to continue to Dhaka after a one-hour stopover.
Of the 275 passengers, 55 boarded in Dhaka, with the rest joining from Chattogram. The group includes children and elderly individuals.
The flight was scheduled to take off from Dubai at 12:05am on Wednesday and land at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram at 7:00am on Thursday, Bangladesh time.
The flight is now expected to depart at 5:30am local time on Friday—roughly 30 hours behind schedule.
Md Abul Bashar, a business class passenger and expatriate real estate businessman based in Abu Dhabi, said he travelled to Dubai on Wednesday evening to catch the flight home.
“Passengers of all ages, including women, children, and elderly people, are still stranded in Dubai in distress,” he added.
According to Bashar, passengers had received their boarding passes and were waiting to board when a one-hour delay was first announced. Later, they were told the flight would depart at 3:00am.
“When it still didn’t take off, I spoke to a Biman official at the airport,” he said. “He showed me a video clip showing an issue with one of the wheels.
“He [the Biman official] said a new tyre would be fitted once it arrived on an Emirates Airlines flight from Dhaka.”
The replacement wheel, however, did not arrive on that flight.
“Emirates couldn’t carry the tyre due to restrictions,” said Dastagir. “It’s now being flown in on a Biman flight scheduled to land at 1:45am on Thursday.
“The aircraft is expected to depart for Chattogram at 5:30am on Friday.
“All the passengers were taken to a hotel. Only one family of 12 chose not to go. They stayed in the Visitors Lounge instead,” he added.
