The meeting, to be held at Hasina’s official residence, Ganabhaban, on Friday evening, will discuss the Awami League’s mayoral candidate for the Chittagong City Corporation, party sources said.
Awami League Presidium member Mosharraf Hossain said presidents and general secretaries of party units in Chittagong city and north and south districts and central leaders had been asked to attend.
He told bdnews24.com: “The meeting may discussion the (party’s) mayoral candidate in the city corporation polls.”
The Election Commission on Wednesday announced the poll schedules for the Dhaka North and South and Chittagong city corporations, fixing Apr 28 as the voting date.
Though the ruling party primarily selected its candidates for two Dhaka city corporations, it is yet to pick anyone for the Chittagong polls.
Chittagong city Awami League President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin and Treasurer Abdus Salam have started campaigning for their candidature.
However, selection of the candidate will depend on decision of party President and Prime Minister Hasina.
Awami League Presidium member Obaidul Quader had said at a meeting in Chittagong that the party chief would select the mayor aspirant.
Meanwhile, a rumour spread on Thursday night in Chittagong that the Awami League had selected its mayoral candidate.
Party leaders, however, described the claim as being baseless.
An Awami League leader told bdnews24.com on condition of anonymity that a meeting of senior leaders was held on Thursday night at Ganabhaban.
“Discussion on Chittagong (election) took place there but no decision was made,” he said.
