The strikes were conducted on the midnight of Wednesday and Thursday, Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, director general of military operations (DGMO), told the media in Delhi.
"Significant casualties have been caused to terrorists and those trying to shield them," he said.
But he clarified that there were no 'further plans' to conduct such strikes inside Pakistani territory and that 'India has spoken to Pakistan' about the raid.
"These were launch pads where terrorists were waiting to cross into India and launch attacks. Our strikes were meant to defend the nation," Lt Gen Singh said.
"We have recovered GPS with Pakistani markings and captured terrorists have confessed to their training in Pakistan's Kashmir," Lt Gen Singh said.
But he did not provide details of the locations that have been subjected to ' surgical strikes, but claimed 'five terrorist launch pads' had been completely destroyed.
The Pakistani army has said in a statement that the firing lasted for six hours from 2:30am to 8:30am, reports IANS.
"Our forces gave a befitting reply to India's unprovoked aggression in Hotsprings, Lipa and Bhimber sectors," it reads.
But it denied any 'surgical strikes' by Indian forces and said the claims were 'fabricated to create media hype.'
"We will give a befitting reply if there is a surgical strike," said the Pakistani military in the statement.
