The star batsman captained the team on their last tour of Australia but Test skipper MS Dhoni’s shadow lingered over his leadership role then.
So the Fatullah Test, which kicks off on Wednesday, is officially being considered his first outing as India’s Test captain.
“Definitely it will be a special moment. I never thought that I will lead the Indian Test team at the age of 26. Just playing for India was my only childhood dream,” said Kohli in a press conference on Tuesday.
Kohli said his mentality has changed with time. The BCCI and his teammates see him qualified for the responsibility.
“For this I am indebted to them. I am eagerly waiting to start my journey as the regular captain. I hope the result will be positive too.”
Kohli acted as stand-in captain in the Australia tour after Dhoni had been ruled out of the first Test due to injury.
Dhoni returned to lead India in the two Tests that followed but abruptly retired after the third Test and Kohli then captained India in the fourth Test as well.
But Kohli thinks the Bangladesh series is actually his new start as the regular captain.
“This is the start of the new innings as the captain. In Australia I knew that I was leading in Dhoni’s stead.
“So when I’ll go out for the toss tomorrow, it will be a special moment for me. Maybe I’ll distinguish these memories when I recall them after retirement.
