Bangladesh Bank in a press release said on Wednesday the number of mobile banking accounts stood at 11.24 million now.
It said the number has doubled in seven months alone -- from 5 million in April.
“This achievement will play a vital role in financial inclusion within three years of the inception of mobile banking,” the release said.
Mobile financial services provide facilities like money transfer, deposit and withdrawal, payment of salaries, utility bills and merchant payments.
Mobile Financial Service is internationally recognised as an inclusive financial service.
This service was introduced in Bangladesh in 2010.
The central bank has allowed 28 banks to provide mobile banking. Of them, 19 banks have launched the service.
Brac Bank’s subsidiary institution ‘Bikash’ and Dutch Bangla Mobile Banking topped the service providers’ list.
Transactions through mobile banking stood at Tk 50. 96 billion in Oct.
As many as 7,85,000 transactions take place through mobile banking , with the volume transacted around an average Tk 1.7 billion .
